Freight Class vs. NMFC Code: What's the Difference?

The core distinction: identity vs. rating
The fastest way to keep these straight: the NMFC item number identifies the commodity, and the freight class rates (prices) it. They answer two different questions.
- NMFC item number — "What is it?" A specific number (e.g. NMFC item 156600 for furniture, item 86650 for plastic articles) drawn from the National Motor Freight Classification, a catalog of every commodity that moves by LTL. It is an identity: it pins down exactly which commodity, sub-type, and packaging condition you are tendering. It often includes a sub-number too (for example, 156600-sub 2).
- Freight class — "How does it rate?" One of 18 classes from 50 (densest, cheapest) to 500 (lightest/bulkiest, most expensive). It is a rating: it is the number the carrier's pricing engine multiplies against weight and lane to produce your rate.
An analogy: the NMFC item number is like a product's catalog SKU — it says precisely which thing this is. The freight class is like its tax bracket — the rating tier that determines what you actually pay. How they relate: one item, sometimes many classes
NMFC item and freight class are distinct but tightly linked — the item is what assigns the class. The relationship is not always one-to-one, and that is the single most important thing to understand.
Some NMFC items assign a fixed class: the item is the class, full stop, regardless of how you pack it. This is common for fragile, hazardous, or high-value goods, where the carrier's liability and handling risk — not density — drive the rating.
Many other items are density-based and carry several sub-provisions, each mapping a density range to a different class. A single NMFC item can look like this:
- Less than 1 lb/ft³ → class 400
- 1 but less than 2 lb/ft³ → class 300
- 2 but less than 4 lb/ft³ → class 250
- … and so on down to — for the densest tiers — class 50.
The best-known example is NMFC Item 680, the catch-all density scale for many general commodities: the item number stays the same, but your freight class moves up or down the scale with the actual packed density of the shipment. So "what is the NMFC code for my product" rarely has one answer — the item is fixed, but the class is whatever the density (or a fixed provision) dictates. Why a quote needs both numbers
A correct LTL bill of lading carries both the NMFC item number and the freight class. Listing one without the other is incomplete, and carriers treat it as a red flag for inspection.
- The class drives the price. The carrier's tariff is organized by class — the class, combined with billed weight and the origin–destination lane, produces the base rate. Without a class, there is no rate.
- The NMFC item proves the class. The item number is the audit trail. When a carrier inspects your freight, they check whether the commodity matches the declared NMFC item, and whether the class you wrote matches what that item permits at the shipment's actual density. The item is your justification; the class is your charge.
Put plainly: the class is what you pay on, and the NMFC item is the receipt that says you were allowed to pay that. Tender only a class and you have a number you cannot defend; tender only an NMFC item and the carrier still has to derive a class to bill you (and may not derive the one you expected). What goes wrong when you confuse them
Treating "NMFC code" and "freight class" as the same field — or declaring one and guessing the other — is the leading cause of reclassification charges. Here is the failure chain:
- You declare a class that the NMFC item doesn't support. You write class 70 because your product "feels heavy," but the matching NMFC item is a density-scale item and your packed shipment only rates class 110. The carrier inspects, reclassifies, and rebills the difference — often with a fee on top.
- You pick the wrong NMFC item entirely. A product that ships knocked-down (flat-packed) versus assembled can fall under different items with different classes. Use the assembled item for a flat-packed shipment and you have mis-declared both numbers.
- You omit the NMFC item and let the carrier assign one. Without your item number on the BOL, the carrier's inspector chooses the item and class — and they have no incentive to pick the cheaper interpretation.

How to get both numbers right, together
Because the NMFC item and the freight class are derived from the same shipment, the most reliable workflow produces both in one pass:
- Identify the NMFC item from the commodity. Match your product — including its packaging condition (assembled, knocked-down, boxed, palletized) — to the correct NMFC item number. This is the identity step.
- Measure and weigh the packaged unit. Length × width × height in inches (including pallet and overhang), and total tendered weight. Compute density: weight ÷ cubic feet.
- Read the class off the item's provision. If the item is fixed-class, that's your class. If it's a density-scale item (like Item 680), match your computed density to the right sub-provision to get the class.
- Put both on the BOL. NMFC item number (with sub) and the resulting freight class.
