What is LTL shipping?
LTL — less-than-truckload — moves freight that is too big for parcel but too small to fill a trailer. Many shippers’ loads ride on the same truck, and each pays only for the portion of the trailer their freight occupies. To make shared trailers economical, LTL carriers run hub-and-spoke networks: freight is picked up locally, brought to a terminal, line-hauled to a regional hub, sorted, and forwarded to the destination terminal for delivery.

What is FTL shipping?
FTL — full truckload — means one shipper’s freight occupies an entire trailer (typically a 48- or 53-foot dry van). You pay for the whole truck whether or not you physically fill it, and the truck drives direct from origin to destination with no terminal stops or re-sorting in between.
FTL is used for large shipments — generally enough freight to fill most of a trailer, or roughly 15,000 pounds and up — and for loads that are time-sensitive, fragile, or high-value enough that you want to avoid extra handling. Because there is no consolidation network behind it, FTL is rated very differently from LTL.

When to choose LTL vs FTL
Choose LTL when your shipment is bigger than parcel but smaller than a truckload — usually 1 to 6 pallets and under about 15,000 pounds — is palletized, and is not extremely time-critical. Sharing trailer space keeps the cost far below paying for a whole truck you wouldn’t fill.
Choose FTL when you have enough freight to fill (or nearly fill) a trailer, when the shipment is urgent and needs the fastest direct transit, or when the goods are fragile or high-value and you want to minimize handling. As a rough rule, somewhere around 6 or more pallets or roughly 15,000 lb is the crossover point where booking a full truck often becomes cheaper and faster than LTL — though the exact break-even depends on lane, class, and current capacity.
How cost is calculated for each
LTL cost is built from several variables, because the carrier has to fairly split a shared trailer:
- Freight class (NMFC 50–500) — the single biggest driver; lower classes (denser, easier-to-handle freight) rate cheaper per pound.
- Actual weight and density of the shipment.
- Distance and lane — the origin-to-destination ZIP pairing.
- Accessorials — liftgate, residential delivery, inside delivery, limited-access locations, and fuel surcharges.

Why freight class matters for LTL but not FTL
Freight class exists to fairly price shared trailer space. When dozens of different commodities ride together, the carrier needs a standardized way to charge each one for the room it takes and the handling risk it carries — so the NMFC freight class system rates freight on density, stowability, handling, and liability.
FTL doesn’t need this. You’ve already paid for the entire trailer, so it makes no difference to the carrier whether you load dense steel or light foam — the rate is the same per mile either way.
